Tabs

Notation is used to show students what notes to play.  It is the written form of the language of music.  This is how the teacher gives written instructions to students during lesson, and how I can send further instructions during the week.  It is almost completely essential to do this when taking guitar lessons so the student can better use their practice time at home.  We will also be using audio files and video to reinforce what is taught in the lessons.  It will very important to understand notation and to become familiar with reading it.  We will also learn the names of the notes and where they are on the guitar as well as the names of chords.  Rhythm notation will be taught to learn accompaniment (what the guitar plays while the soloist plays or sings) and this process goes much faster when the student is familiar with both forms of notation.   Daily use will be very important to understanding and using either form of notation.

What are "tabs"?  Why use them?  Are they better than standard notation?  Here is a bit of info from the wikipedia page about tabs:

Tablature (or tabulature, or tab for short) is a form of musical notation indicating instrument fingering rather than musical pitches.
Tablature is common for fretted stringed instruments such as the lute, vihuela, or guitar, as well as many free reed aerophones such as the harmonica. Tablature was common during the Renaissance and Baroque eras, and is commonly used in notating rock, pop, folk, ragtime, bluegrass, and blues music.
Three types of organ tablature were used in Europe: German, Spanish and Italian. There are several types of ocarina tabulature.[1] Harp tablature was used in Spain and Wales.
To distinguish standard musical notation from tablature, the former is usually called "staff notation" or just "notation".
An alternate usage of the word "tab" is common on the Internet, where it can also refer to conventional chord symbols (for harmony), or note names (for melody).

The advantage in using tabs is to simply and directly illustrate where a note is on the guitar or bass.  The other traditional form of music notation is called Standard notation and it is also encouraged.  We will be using standard notation where we can, particularly when we learn accompaniment patterns.
