Basics for beginners. Harmonizing for newbies.

I'm going to dig into the archives today for a few older videos that point to a few more things we can do with the major scale, in this case, the G major.   I give most of my students the G major scale as it fits nicely on the first three (treble) strings with a lower octave version fitting nicely on the three bass strings once the first scale is familiar enough to add the lower notes.    When we start out it is important to have simple exercises that we can build on.   Playing the scale and then playing the pairs of notes that make up the diatonic thirds are simple steps to making scales musical and (eventually) understanding how they are used to make melodies, harmonies, and chords.   Many students notice that these thirds sound like music they have heard before.  That is precisely the idea!
