If you are serious about music take the guitar with you on vacation! Parents how serious do you take your student's commitment to the instrument and to music? It is important to build a day to day relationship by setting up a routine and by thinking about what we are doing as something that is a part of our lives. Breaks do happen, sometimes we can't help that but it's how we think about things we are committed to that make a difference in whether or not we are successful. Habits usually mirror our internal commitment.
We should also look at travel guitars! If you fly it is difficult to carry a guitar with you, there are options. I know the Fret Shop has some small, portable guitars. This is a pretty good discussion topic once you get into the logistics of carrying a guitar with you, it can be a bit of a challenge!
