Right hand technique: Fingerpicking and flatpicking (with a pick) as demonstrated by the great Mark Knopfler

I'm taking you to see a specialist today.  There is very little I could add to this video except that what he refers to as a "teacher's nightmare", the way his fingers play some of the bass strings sometimes, is not my nightmare!   As you all that have been with me for a while know, I won't tell you how you "have" to do it.   I'll tell you some things that are commonly done and then we get to work finding your own path.  What is absolutely unavoidable is the desire to be good at it and the subsequent determined practice that bears that out.  Determined practice is something you "have" to do to get the most out of the experience.   It is fun to be competent on a musical instrument, and satisfying to be good.  Here's Mark:
