The capo. What is it. What does it do?

What is a Capo?  Here is a start.  Capos basically act as an extra finger and can be used to:

1) Change keys and still retain favored chord voicings and fingerings,

2) Change fingerings and chord shapes while maintaining the same key

3) Stretch into voicings and fingerings otherwise impossible in certain keys.  This can be very helpful in certain open tunings and guitar parts that need for your hand to be up the neck while utilizing open strings.
